This year, the Kumbh Mela will see the transgender participation for the first time. The transgender akhada had been preparing to participate in the Kumbh for two years now. Transgender Akhada called it a step forward towards acceptance and termed it ‘Akhada beyond sexuality’.

The year 2019 has started on a great note, as transgender participation in Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj.
Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, a member of Kinnar Akhada said, “We are thrilled to be a part of Kumbh Mela as it’s an initiative towards making every transgender feel included as well as accepted in the society.
She added, For us, this participation is about society accepting us. The creator is within us and once we die, we will go back to him. Our doors are open for all. In this conservative society, the acceptance of the third gender is a remarkable step. The transgender community is trying to make its place in art, culture or religion. Kinnar Akhada in Kumbh Mela is only to give unconditional love to everyone irrespective of everything.
Pavitra, Secretary of Akhada said that she has been with the Akhada since its formation. We have been preparing for two years to enter into Kumbh Mela.
The Kinnar Akhada reportedly faced some protests initially, whenever there is some historic and remarkable step, some people object. But the community overcome all hurdles and happy to be a part of Kumbh Mela 2019.
They said, ” the general public has been very supportive. All we can see respect in everyone’s eyes for us and acceptance in this society.
The Ardh Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj will start from January 14th and ends on March 3rd at the Triveni Sangam.
