Fans expected the likes of KL Rahul and Dinesh Karthik to play the first match.
Without any doubt, India won the first T20 versus Ireland comprehensively. The batting unit fired, specially the Indian openers were on song. Solid performances from Sharma and Dhawan meant that all questions of KL Rahul’s and Dinesh Karthik’s selection were given rest.
Undoubtedly Rahul had a fantastic IPL, he score 659 runs int he 14 games for Kings XI Punjab as compared to Rohit Sharma who could only manage 286 runs. The fans and the cricket pundits were just a hint disappointed, Rahul deserved a place at least in the middle order.
When asked about the mindset behind the playing XI, captain Virat Kohli said that these two games are a good opportunity for everybody to get a feel of the playing conditions. “We are using these two games (in Ireland) to play everyone, and I have already told them that the guys who didn’t play will get an opportunity in the next game,” said Kohli.
The captain also expressed that he would want to experiment with the middle order in the T20 games against Ireland and England, it would also help to decide the players for the 50-over games.
He also talked about flexibility in the batting order and his mindset for the upcoming matches “I’ve got a good mindset of who’s batting where so in the next few games, not just the Ireland ones but also against England, we will look to be flexible and use them as and when the situation requires them,” said the captain.
The skipper also expressed that the flexibility will also add the element of surprise for the opponents: “We will look to surprise the opposition and we’ve asked the batsmen to have that flexibility and they have responded very well.”
The first game saw handsome support for the Indian team and England is always known to have a strong Indian fan base. So, this factor of support will also add to the strength of Team India as they move forward in this long tour.
