The Jammu and Kashmir administration created a separate division for Ladakh. The region was earlier a part of Kashmir but the people have been demanding for a separate division as they were facing many problems.
The people of that region, have suffered for decades due to administrative disconnect and no road connectivity with the other states. If they want to get any official work done, they had to travel all the way to Srinagar.
With shortage of water, health services to not having an access to outside during winter, they were facing many hardships. Now, the step has opened a window for people to solve their problems within the region. The J&K Government took a decision on a long-pending demand of residents.
After the decision, a committee has been assigned by the Governor Administration headed by Principal Secretary to plan everything else from locations for offices, staff roles, posts and duties. All mainstream parties, from the National Conference, Congress, BJP, PDP and People’s Conference, have welcomed the move.
The new division will include the full administrative and revenue division of Leh and Kargil districts. With its headquarters at Leh, the division will have its own Inspector General of Police and Divisional Commissioner. While some people also suggested that Ladakh has unique topographic conditions, and it should be given special status.
The residents of this region are glad to hear this step but some people are against this due to setting up the headquarters only at Leh. All party leaders of district Kargil protested on Sunday against the office headquarter at Leh.
Around thousands of people including social activists performed a peaceful protest against the decision. They stated that the people of Kargil are not getting an equal share in the decision of separate division to the Ladakh. While the leaders of Kargil had already threatened that they will resign if the Government will sideline the people of Kargil.
