After the hat-trick against Chinese Taipei in the Intercontinental Cup in Mumbai on Friday, Indian Football Captain Sunil Chhetri scored a brace against Kenya on Sunday. Chhetri scored in the eighth and 29th minutes and these goals have also given him a total tally of 64 international goals in a total of 102 games played by him. This makes him stand on the same level as that of Lionel Messi who has scored 64 international goals but interestingly in 124 matches.
Chhetri scored the first goal of the match in the 8th minute when he got a free kick from Anirudh Thapa and converted it into a score. It gave India a lead into the match and Chhetri got his 63rd international goal. Chhetri achieved the final touchdown of the match in the 29th minute of the match by chesting the ball down from a long diagonal pass which he got from Sandesh Jhingan and motioned it home with his left foot.
The Indian team had a great offensive start and penetrated the opponents Kenyan’s defense two times during the first minute of the game only.
Kenyan team’s defense was sloppy, to say the least, and it got under pressure when the Indian team continued attacking and the ball was in their hold for a long time. Even their attacks were tackled by the Indian team efficiently not allowing them to score in the first half of the game.
During the second half of the game also Kenyans came all ready to attack with new energy. They tried to score a goal but every attempt was down in the drain as the Indian Keeper Gurpreet Sandhu’s brilliant dives saved the day.
Chhetri succeeded in giving India a fulfilling victory after the outburst of Indian fan base of football, following the viral video of Chhetri asking the people to come and support the players. While Kenya will be looking forward to seeking revenge for their humiliating loss in the league stage, the home team will look to end the tournament on a positive note for future upcoming games.
