With each year Bollywood is giving us audience a better movie to watch and be entertained. Not just in the quality of acting but the screenplay, direction, graphics everything is evolving. Bollywood is being more recognized overseas too. 2017 gave us movies like Bahubali 2 and Tiger Zinda Hai to feast on. Now, here’s a list of the movies released in 2018 who have grossed the highest till now.
Padmaavat (₹5.85 crore)
Padmaavat is a periodic tale about the great valor of the Padmavati. She, with her brilliance and strength, rescued her husband from a sultan. The sultan had heard about her beauty and wanted to claim her so he attacked their province. The movie is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and has Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Aditi Rao Haideri, Jim Sarbh, Raza Murad and various others playing different roles. It was earlier scheduled to be released on 1 December 2017 but due to various protests by the Rajputs it got delayed and was finally released on 25 January. The controversy around the movie only helped in increasing the hype to watch it. And ultimately it grossed over ₹5.85 crore at the box office worldwide. It is one the highest grossing Bollywood films till date.
Pad man (₹120.56 crore)
Padman is written and directed by R. Balki. It is a biography on Arunachalam Muruganatham, a social activist from Tamil Nadu who introduced low-cost sanitary pads. The movie features Sonam Kapoor, Akshay Kumar and Radhika Apte in lead roles. The film was initially planned to be released on 13 April 2018 but was moved to 26 January and then again postponed to 19 Feb to avoid clashing the release of Padmaavat. The movie received a lot of criticism because of the taboo topic but it also received a lot of appraisal for creating awareness about hygiene problems amongst women especially in rural areas. The movie earned approximately ₹120.56 crore after its release.
Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety (₹148.51 crore)
Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety is a 2018 Indian Hindi comedy film directed by Luv Ranjan. The film released theatrically on 23 February 2018. Although it was critically blamed for following the misogyny toward women it did bid well with the audience because of its humor. It was a commercial success and earned ₹148.51 crore worldwide.
Raid (₹142.81 crores)
Featuring Ajay Devgan, Ileana D’Cruz, and Saurabh Shukla, this movie is a crime thriller, written by Ritesh Shah and directed by Raj Kumar Gupta. It was released worldwide on 16th March. The movie is based on a real-life raid that took place in 1980’s by the Income Tax Department. This raid is considered to be one of the longest-running raids till date. The film earned INR 10.04 crore on its first day and by the end, it had earned ₹142.81 crores.
Baaghi 2 (₹253 crores)
The film was released worldwide on 30 March 2018. Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and directed by Ahmed Khan the movie stars Tiger Shroff and Disha Patani. It is a sequel to the 2016 movie Baaghi and a remake of Telugu movie Kshanam. Baaghi 2 earned ₹25.1 crore net on its opening day, marking the biggest opening-day of 2018 (ahead of Padmaavat), the biggest Good Friday opening, the third biggest opening in the last 15 months (after Tiger Zinda Hai and Golmaal Again), and the seventh biggest for an action film. It earned ₹253 crores in total by the end.
Despite all the criticism faced by these movies, the figures earned by them speaks a lot. There were people whose opinions clashed with what these movies revolved around but ultimately there was a much bigger audience that had same inclinations.
